Good acoustic treatment isn't about throwing foam on a wall and hoping for the best — it's a mix of material science, physics and a bit of trial and error. This guide breaks down what actually makes a panel or diffuser work, so you can make an informed choice instead of guessing.
What is Rockwool?
Rockwool (also called mineral wool) is the core material inside most Artiqtone acoustic panels. It's made by melting basalt rock and recycled slag at extremely high temperatures and spinning the molten material into fine fibers — the same way cotton candy is spun from sugar. Those fibers are then pressed into semi-rigid boards.
The random, tangled fiber structure is what makes it such a good sound absorber: sound waves entering the material lose energy as they vibrate the fibers and convert into tiny amounts of heat through friction. Unlike foam, rockwool is stone-based, so it's naturally dense, fire-resistant and doesn't sag or degrade over time.
Why Density Matters
Density is measured in kg/m³ and it directly affects which frequencies a panel absorbs best. Lower-density boards (around 40–50 kg/m³) are lighter and absorb high frequencies well, but let more low-frequency energy pass through. Higher-density boards (70–100 kg/m³ and above) resist airflow more, which pushes absorption further down into the midrange and bass.
More density isn't automatically "better" — it's a trade-off against weight, cost and diminishing returns. A vocal booth benefits from mid-density panels tuned for speech clarity, while a mixing or mastering room often needs higher-density panels or dedicated bass traps in the corners, where low-frequency energy naturally builds up.
What is NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)?
NRC is a single number, from 0 to 1, that summarizes how much sound a material absorbs. It's calculated by averaging a panel's absorption coefficient at four standard test frequencies — 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz — and rounding to the nearest 0.05. An NRC of 0 means a perfectly reflective surface (like bare concrete); an NRC of 1 means the material absorbs essentially all the sound that hits it.
Most Artiqtone rockwool panels sit in the 0.85–1.0 range, which is considered excellent. That said, NRC is an average — it doesn't tell you how a panel performs at very low bass frequencies or very high treble, which is why thickness and air gap (below) matter just as much as the NRC number on the spec sheet.
Air Gap Explained
Mounting a panel flush against the wall is the least effective way to use it. Leaving an air gap behind the panel — even 25–50mm — dramatically improves low-frequency absorption. This works because of a principle related to quarter-wavelength theory: air particle velocity (and therefore energy available for a fibrous absorber to convert to heat) is lowest right at a hard wall and increases as you move away from it.
As a rough rule of thumb, a 1-inch (25mm) air gap behind a panel performs similarly to doubling that panel's thickness — but at a fraction of the material cost and weight. This is why we recommend mounting brackets that hold panels slightly off the wall wherever bass control matters.
Panel Thickness vs Performance
Thickness changes which end of the frequency spectrum a panel controls best:
- 25mm (1"): Effective on high frequencies (sibilance, harsh reflections). Good for podcast and streaming setups where speech clarity matters more than bass control.
- 50mm (2"): The most common all-rounder thickness — solid performance from the midrange up, noticeable improvement in low-mids.
- 75–100mm (3–4"): Starts meaningfully absorbing lower-midrange and bass frequencies. Used in mixing rooms, home theatres and corner bass traps.
Beyond a certain point, adding thickness gives diminishing returns for the added cost and wall space — this is where an air gap becomes a more efficient upgrade than simply buying a thicker panel.
Fabric & Finish Options
The fabric wrapped around an absorptive panel isn't just cosmetic — it needs to be acoustically transparent, meaning sound can pass through it freely into the rockwool core. Tightly woven or vinyl-backed fabrics can reflect high frequencies right back into the room, quietly undoing the panel's performance. We use breathable, acoustically rated fabrics specifically for this reason.
Wooden diffusers (like our Skyline range) work differently — there's no fabric involved at all. The exposed geometric wood relief pattern scatters sound in multiple directions instead of absorbing it, which is why diffusers and absorptive panels are often used together rather than as substitutes for one another.
Fire Resistance
Rockwool is naturally non-combustible — it's manufactured from molten rock at temperatures over 1,000°C, so it doesn't ignite, doesn't feed a fire, and doesn't release toxic smoke the way many foam products can under heat. This is one of the biggest practical advantages rockwool has over polyurethane acoustic foam, especially in studios, cafes, offices and any commercial space where fire safety compliance matters.
Moisture Resistance
Quality rockwool is treated to be hydrophobic — it repels water rather than absorbing it, which means it won't sag, swell or become a breeding ground for mold and mildew the way untreated fibrous materials can in humid conditions. This matters a lot in Indian climates, particularly in coastal cities and during monsoon season, where humidity-related material degradation is a real risk for anything mounted on a wall long-term.
Installation Methods
How you mount a panel affects both looks and performance (see Air Gap above). Common methods include:
- Z-clips: A two-part rail system — one half on the wall, one on the panel — that creates a consistent air gap and lets you remove panels later without damage. Best for permanent installs where you want the performance benefit of an air gap.
- Impaling clips or acoustic adhesive: Budget-friendly, flush-mounted, effectively permanent. Good when wall space is tight and an air gap isn't practical.
- French cleat: Strong, hidden mounting for heavier panels or larger diffuser pieces.
- Velcro or magnetic mounts: Fully removable, ideal for rented spaces, temporary studios or frequently rearranged rooms.
Placement matters as much as mounting hardware — first reflection points (where sound bounces from your speakers to your ears) and room corners (where bass builds up) give the biggest improvement per panel.
Common Myths
- "Foam and rockwool are the same thing." Acoustic foam is open-cell polyurethane — lightweight and useful for high-frequency control, but it isn't fire-resistant the way rockwool is, and it breaks down faster over time.
- "Egg cartons work as acoustic treatment." They don't. Egg cartons are shaped for cushioning during shipping, not sound absorption, and have negligible measurable effect on room acoustics.
- "Thicker or more panels is always better." Over-treating a room makes it sound unnaturally dead and lifeless. Most rooms need a mix of absorption and diffusion, not wall-to-wall panels.
- "Acoustic treatment and soundproofing are the same." They solve different problems. Soundproofing blocks sound from entering or leaving a room (mass, decoupling, sealing gaps). - Podcasters & streamers: Thinner (25–50mm) absorptive panels around the mic position, focused on taming harsh reflections for cleaner speech.
- Home studio / mixing & mastering: Thicker panels (50–100mm) at first reflection points, plus corner bass traps, mounted with an air gap where possible.
- Gaming & home theatre: A mix of absorption (for dialogue clarity) and diffusion (to keep the room feeling spacious and immersive rather than dead).
- Rehearsal & live rooms: Lean more on diffusers like the Skyline range to break up flutter echo while keeping the room lively and natural.
